Happy St. Valentine's Day

This special day lends itself to bring
"Arts & Sciences" closer to Medicine and
Biology. The ideas in St. Valentine's Day
include those in LUPERcalia and LUPUS.

Happy St. Valentine's Day with implicit wishes for

Love and Fecundity ... also a reminder of
Carnal, Carnival, Lupercalia, Lupus ... and
Lupus and Consummated Love can Consume ...

To blow or hurl a kiss with the Cupid's bow
outlined by the vermilion of the upper lip ...
like capricious arrows akin to those shot
blindly by baby Cupid ... can become a cause of
Love sickness ... underscore the blindness of
Love ... consuming Love ... even Zeus became
a victim of Cupid, so did Eros and his beloved
Psyche.

An early custom in England was to draw a name
and give the chosen person a present ...

Little is known about Valentine except that he
was clubbed to death in 269. Christians made him
a Saint and chose February 14 as his memorial day.
Some say the intent was to obliterate a popular
Roman feast of Lupercalia dedicated to Juno or
Pan as symbols of Love and Fecundity. In any case,
these sort of festivities stubbornly persists as
carnal Carnival.

St. Valentine's day is now a compound idea. On the
forefront is Love and faded into the background
is St. Valentine's tragedy. Fecundity, on the
other hand, is politely ignored, both by religion
and MERChants. Perhaps modern St. Valentine's day
should also be in honor of MERCury in recognition
of the labor of those engaged in MERCiless
MERCenary MERChandizing of "Valentine".
