+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ "The greatest enterprise of the mind has always been and always will be the attempted linkage of the sciences and humanities ..." Edward O. Wilson, in "Consilience", 1998. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ "Word Play" <> FENESTRATION DEFENESTRATION A note from Mr. J. X. seeking to find ideas in "FENSTER", the German word for WINDOW, provided today's motif. I will shed some light on FENESTRA by noting that FENESTRELLA in Latin denotes a little WINDOW HOLE or OPENING made to shed light. The rich and powerful often liked palaces FENESTRATED by many WINDOWS and ENTRIES. The rich often also liked to eat rich food - a cause for FENESTRATED arterial linings causing heart attacks. Other rich and powerful people became victims of surgeons capable of FENESTRATING their skulls - we find evidence of CRANIOTOMIES and TREPANATIONS in archeological collections. Another risk faced by the rich and powerful was DEFENESTRATION, that is, being thrown out of a WINDOW - try not to laugh! - the genocidal Thirty Year's War started this way - in 1618 three Czech leaders were DEFENESTRATED. The war ended the hegemony of liberal Prague, installing imperialist Vienna as an agent of conservative ideas and the Roman Church. More recently, in 1948, comrade Stalin blockaded Berlin and ordered the "liquidation" of democracy in Czechoslovakia. Apparently, the KGB orchestrated the DEFENESTRATION of the famous democratic leader Jan Masaryk. The event was reported as a suicide. Another notable case concerns a recent Premier of China who survived but was permanently crippled by a DEFENESTRATION committed by his Communist comrades. Many of us perpetuate the idea of DEFENESTRATION whenever we urge others to "go and jump out of the window".
